California's Route 66 Ghost Towns
Freeway changes caused the elimination of many 1950-era towns and villages along historic Route 66.

Approaching the town from the west.

The change from Route 66 to Highway 40 caused the abandonment of many communities from San Bernadino County, California's largest county, through the western states, all the way to Chicago.
From here, on the map, the Old Route 66 went through Oatman, Arizona, which is, still, barely alive and kicking.
